In a study published in the journal Science Immunology, the researchers reported that the antibody decreased tumor growth in types of skin cancer, brain cancer and intestines carcinoma, so that it is an attractive prospect for cancer immunotherapy.
The antibody can precisely target regulating T cells which in turn unleash the immune system to kill cancer cells.
T cells (Tregs) which help maintain the immune system`s tolerance of “self, ” can, unintentionally, promote cancer`s growth by protecting against the body`s immune system from detecting and attacking cancer cells.
Howard Weiner who is researchers of Anti-LAP Antibodies from Brigham and Women`s Hospital in Boston. He found that they could precisely focus on Tregs using an antibody for cancer treatment.
Antibodies in the beginning to investigate the development of multiple sclerosis, but team of developers realized their work experienced implications for the research of cancer.
In the current study, the team used preclinical models to investigate how well anti-LAP antibodies could work in blocking the essential components of Tregs and repairing the immune system`s capability to fight cancer.
They will found that anti-LAP functions on multiple cell masse to promote the immune system’s ability to deal with cancer, including increasing the activity of certain types of T cells and boosting immune memory.
“In addition to studying the therapeutic effect, we needed to characterise the system by which the anti-LAP antibody can activate immune system, ” said business lead author Galina Gabriely, a scientist in the Weiner laboratory.
